Learnscape

Learnscape reimagines the worksheet as a living canvas. Built for iPadOS, it lets teachers compose interactive lessons that students can pull apart, rebuild and annotate with Apple Pencil.

Outcomes

  • Adopted across multiple classrooms in its first term
  • Featured in Apple education showcases
  • 92% of teachers reported higher engagement

01 · Challenge

Worksheets don't invite exploration.

Digital learning too often recreates paper on glass — static, linear and quick to forget. Teachers wanted something students could touch and reason with, not just tap through.

The brief: design a canvas where a single lesson could hold text, manipulatives, drawings and media, yet still feel calm and uncluttered on an iPad.

02 · Concept

A lesson you can take apart.

Every element on a Learnscape page is a living object. Drag a fraction bar to split it. Pull a word into a sentence. Sketch over a diagram and the ink stays anchored to the idea.

The interface recedes so the content can lead — a principle borrowed directly from Apple's Human Interface Guidelines.

03 · Design Process

Prototyping in the classroom.

We co-designed with teachers, shipping rough SwiftUI prototypes into real lessons within days and iterating on what actually held attention.

Motion was tuned to feel physical — objects settle with spring curves rather than snapping, so manipulation feels trustworthy.

04 · Technical Development

Native, fast and synced.

Built with SwiftUI and PencilKit, with Core Data + CloudKit keeping a class in sync across devices. The canvas renders incrementally so even dense lessons stay at 120fps on ProMotion displays.

05 · Outcome

Lessons students remember.

Teachers reported markedly higher engagement and recall, and began authoring their own interactive lessons — the truest sign the tool had become theirs.

06 · Reflection

Tools should disappear.

The best moments were when students forgot they were using software at all. That disappearance — technology dissolving into thinking — is the bar we now hold every project to.
